Welshpool Town Council will work with a social entrepreneur in a bid to revive the town centre and fill the growing number of empty shops.
At this week’s full council meeting, Mayor, Cllr Alison Davies, was asked by Cllr Ben Gwalchmai what the latest was on reviving the town centre, and following the latest closures and likelihood of losing M&Co by Easter.
In response, the Town Mayor, Cllr Alison Davies, said that former Welshpool High School pupil Mark Gibson has been appointed and work would start soon.
“Mark will be well-known to many as he was educated in Welshpool,” said Cllr Davies.
“He is a national social entrepreneur and mainly works in England but also works in Wales and he is obviously very interested in Welshpool because it is where he grew up.
“We have talked about opportunities and he is hopefully going to see what sort of businesses he could attract. He will be looking at things like social enterprises.”
The town centre has been rocked by a mass exodus of national brands over the past two years with HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, WH Smith, Savers and Sainsbury’s all shutting up shop, leaving empty buildings behind.
