Big knocks for Griffiths, Corfield

Newtown’s promising run in the Shropshire Premier League was ended abruptly with a heavy home defeat to Worfield.

Having been put in to bat, Newtown were restricted to 80 all out, which was adjusted to 69 off 37 overs for the visitors to chase due to the weather. Only three players made double figures with Hamish Harding top scoring for Newtown with 21.

Newtown put up a fight in the reply, but Worfield moved second in the table with five wickets lost during the chase. Jonathan Davies took 3-30.

The much anticipated Division One derby between Welshpool and Montgomery was abandoned due to the rain.

But in Division Four, Sam Griffiths smashed 92 as his Guilsfield side cruised to a 68-run victory at Coton Hall. Griffiths made up over half of his team’s runs, with extras (42) boosting their total to 181 all out.

Former skipper Griffiths then took three wickets along with Sam Birch to restrict Coton Hall to 113 all out and enable Guilsfield to move third.

A fine 103 from Tom Corfield ensured Montgomery II picked up another useful win over Forton II in Reserve Division Two to stay second. The opener’s century steered Monty to 226-6 with fellow opener Richard Jones hitting 61.

Joe Haycock then took 4-15 as Monty reduced Forton II to 92 all out.

Welshpool II were in commanding form at Quatt III in Reserve Division Three after posting a first innings total of 278-8. Runs were aplenty for Nick Davies (92), Dan Chodecki (65) and Dale Evans (44no).

But it was a long day in the field for Pool as well as the hosts held out on 180-8, despite 3-14 from Rupert Redway.
