15/02/2017 @ 08:43

Guilsfield A have won the Shrewsbury & Wem Cup final held on Monday at the Red Lion in Castle Caereinion.

In an outstanding advert for the local sport, the villagers beat Newtown with the lead changing hands throughout the contest.

After Jamie Harris (Newtown) and Dave Knight (Guilsfield) drew the first match with both shooting 33.2, Aaron Knight gave Guilsfield the lead after beating Don Corrbett with a superb possible of 35.2.

But Newtown fought back to reduce the advantage to just 0.3 after Jamie Thomas beat Keiron Cornell.

The league’s individual champion Tabbitha Corbett continued her form with a victory against Chloe Lloyd to open up a three-point margin for Newtown.

But Guilsfield fought back with captain Paul Phillips beating Marina Corbett with a superb possible of 35.3 to Marina's 32.2 to swing the momentum in the village’s favour by just 0.1.

It all went to the final match and what a head-to-head it was with Roger Knight edging Newtown skipper Jess Corbett to win 199.2-198.3.

The League expresses its thanks to the Red Lion in Castle Caereinion and the Castle team for hosting the final, and to Richard and Hywel Morgan for refereeing and scoring the match.

Three-way shoot-out still on

Their second match at home to Llanfair produced a 203.7-186.5 win thanks to Steve Smith (35.3) and Andy Lawrence (35.3) shooting possibles.

Guilsfield A edged past Castle Caereinion 202.8-197.4 with Paul Phillips (35.6) and Castle's Richard Morgan (35.4) scoring possibles.

Churchstoke beat visiting Guilsfield B 203.2-201.1, with the home side’s Paul Gwilliam (35.3) and the away team’s Paul Edwards (35.3) and Catherine Farmer (35.1) getting possibles.
