Getting tight in Airgun League
With young shooters coming into the sport, revitalising the ‘old timers’, the standard of shooting has been outstanding this season.
League leaders Churchstoke made the trip to the Black Lion to take on an improving Llanfair team who are in the process of rebuilding with new shooters and being short of a full complement as well. With several other teams hot on their heels, it was vital they went back home with a win and they started off brilliantly with a magnificent 35.4 (max 35.7) from Jane Thomas. Despite a gallant effort by the home side, and with consistent shooting throughout the team, Churchstoke came out winners 202.0 to 192.9.
Arddleen entertained Guildsfield 'B' at The Horseshoe with both sides looking to keep the pressure on Churchstoke at the top. Despite some excellent shooting by the visitors, consistent top notch shooting by the home team saw them take the match 208.1 to 196.1 with Nick Parr, Martin Pearce and Richard Lewis scoring possibles of 35.2, 35.4 and 35.5 respectively.
Guilsfield 'A' travelled to the Wagon and Horses to take on newly formed Newtown. This encounter turned out to be a classic. Don Corbett for the home team started the ball rolling with a superb 35.4 possible. The excellent shooting continued with scores of 33's and 34's in abundance, but in the end the away side managed to hang on for the win by only .5 of a mark 201.2 to 200.7. Having a high score of 200 and coming second is a rare event which underlined the quality of shooting by both teams.
Castle Caereinion entertained a revitalised Crew Green 'A' at The Red Lion and were out to show that the top teams are there to be shot at, and they did not disappoint. The away side, with a man down, could not match the consistency of the home team’s 33's and 34's who went on to take the match 203.1 to 194.1.
Crew Green 'B', another of those teams needing to keep pace with the leaders, entertained improving Forden at the Admiral Rodney. It turned out to be a low scoring affair with Sue Brown top scoring for the home team with 34.4 and Cloe Jones high scoring for the away side with 34.3. Home advantage told in the end with them taking the match 195.5 to 185.5.
The match of the week on a fantastic night of target shooting has to go to Newtown v Guilsfield 'A'.
It was difficult to choose a shooter of the week with several in contention, but in the end it went to Jane Thomas for her 35.4 possible. Knowing how ill she felt on the night made it even more outstanding. There is a week’s rest now as the 2015/16 season’s presentations are taking place.
