27/04/2017 @ 12:32

Welshpool’s long-awaited new Aldi store opened today with Gold Medal winning Olympic cyclist Joanna Rowsell Shand cutting the ribbon.

Shoppers were queuing to get into the new store as the doors opened for the first time at 8am this morning and Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies was also there to welcome the cyclist to Welshpool.

The retired cyclist, who has family links to Welshpool,  won gold medals in the women's team pursuit at four editions of the World Championships (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014) and picked up gold medals in the same discipline at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics as well as the individual pursuit at the 2014 World Championship.

Rowsell first came to national prominence as a winner of junior national competitions in 2005/2006. She is a reigning Olympic and European champion in the team pursuit, and reigning Commonwealth Games champion in the individual pursuit.
