The BBC programme X-Ray got its facts wrong when it was listing bus fares from Welshpool to London, according to the people who handle National Express in town.
Tickets for the return journey are sold at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) - pictured - which has spoken up in defence of the bus operator.
A spokesperson told us: “The current (National Express) return fare from Newtown to London is £40 and the current fare from Welshpool to London is £38.50. The fare from Welshpool dropped about four weeks ago and from Newtown more recently. The prices do vary slightly depending on demand and date of travel.
“The X-Ray programme was not correct in its statement that the Welshpool fare would not come down as it obviously has.
“If anybody is worried about fares then the Tourist Information Centre would be happy to deal with any enquiries as we are a National Express Agent.”
Over the weekend, we reported how the programme claimed that travellers from Montgomeryshire were being shortchanged by National Express.
It said that passengers getting on the 409 Aberystwyth to London service paid £35 return compared to £80 for those getting on in Newtown and Welshpool.
Following an investigation by X Ray, it was claimed that National Express has reduced the price to £35 from Newtown but had left it higher at Welshpool.
However, the TIC has been quick to clarify the current price situation.
