Stay of execution for Llanfair leisure centre

Caereinion Leisure Centre will be kept open for at least 12 months if a recommendation to the Cabinet is approved later this month.

If supported by the cabinet the decision to fund the leisure centre depends on full council agreement as part of next year’s budget process.

Earlier this year the cabinet agreed to start consultation on the possible transfer of the management of Caereinion Leisure Centre to the High School. Discussions with the school and community in Llanfair Caereinion are ongoing.

The proposal was being investigated as part of plans to reduce leisure service spending by £200,000 in the coming financial year.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Commissioning, Councillor Graham Brown said; “The cabinet has been working on figures since the Welsh Government budget announcement in November, and has been able to identify savings that give us the opportunity to investigate different options for the future long term management of Caereinion Leisure Centre and continue with our discussions with the High School and the local community.

“It’s important we use the coming year to fully investigate alternative options for the cabinet to consider, but this will only go ahead if it is supported by council,” he added.

The cabinet will consider the recommendations on December 20.
