Firefighters host youngster on UK fund tour

28/08/2016 @ 07:26

A nine-year-old boy from Portsmouth who is undertaking a huge challenge to visit every fire station in the United Kingdom to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity and promote awareness of autism was in Welshpool yesterday
Andrew Impey, who lives with autism, could not read or write, struggled with maths, had poor social skills and found it very difficult to communicate with new people.

But since he visited Havant Fire Station in December 2014 to meet the firefighters and have a look around, he has taught himself to read and write, and was inspired to set up his own Twitter account.  https://twitter.com/andrewdaneuk
Using his
Twitter accounthe has now embarked on a journey to visit every fire station in the UK, and document his journey and to vastly improve his social skills.
Andrew’s trips are helping to raise awareness of the impact that autism has on peoples’ lives, as well as raising the profile on on-call firefighters.
He also showcases all the different roles the fire service carries out – from dealing with medical emergencies and car crashes, to education, prevention and community work, and raises money for The Fire Fighters’ Charity.

“During his visit to Welshpool the crew showed him around the station and his level of knowledge was amazing regarding the fire service,” said Watch Manager Brendan McWhinnie.

“We then took him on the canal in the boat where he was able to have a drive of it and he had a visit to Mollies with plenty of free samples to see him on his journey courtesy of Alan Price owner of Mollies and a firefighter at Welshpool,” said Crew Manager Matt Price.“

“During my visits I have met many firefighters who have been injured and have received help and support from the Fire Fighters Charity,” said Andrew. “This made me want to help and I am now raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity. So far I’ve raised £1,548.”
