A recommended walk this summer
The Ann Griffiths Walk remains popular with local people and visitors but first time walkers can find their way thanks to a guide produced by Powys County Council’s Countryside Services team.
Its route through the peaceful woods and meadows alongside the River Vyrnwy between Pont Llogel and Pontrobert makes it an ideal destination for the summer months. Named after the local 18th century hymn-writer Ann Griffiths, the seven-mile trail passes through countryside she would have walked and known.
It is a deeply rural part of Powys, which also links the Pererindod Melangell and Glyndwr’s Way trails. The guidebook also includes descriptions of two circular walks to help further exploration.
In recent years, many of the stiles on the Ann Griffiths Walk have been replaced with gates for ease of access while other maintenance and improvement work continues to be carried out, the most recent being last year. The start of the route at Pont Llogel is along an all-ability trail suitable for wheelchair access, close by the Vyrnwy.
Cllr Jonathan Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Countryside Services, said: “The Ann Griffiths Walk takes in a variety of landscapes from river valley and gorge through meadow and woodland. It follows closely the bank of the River Vyrnwy for most of its length. I have walked this many times with my family but for most people, even some local to the area, it remains an undiscovered gem.”
