Welshpool Canoe Club helped the Friends of Montgomery Canal with a successful litter pick that even saw a shopping trolley retrieved from the water!
Fifteen members in seven canoes and six kayaks collected 10 bags of rubbish from the Town Wharf down to the Wildlife area.
“A variety of litter was collected including cans, bottles, cigarette packets and the inevitable plastic bags,” said the Club’s Laura Frank. “We even pulled out a shopping trolley!
“The canal certainly looked much better when we had finished. This was the fourth year I have helped with the litter pick and the canal is getting better and better over the years.
“The litter we picked up could only really be collected by a boat. The highlight of the trip was going through the lock, which was kindly opened up for us by the Canals and Rivers trust.”
The canal offers a great introduction to canoeing, especially for younger members and Welshpool Canoe Club have regular trips ranging from river trips to gentle flat water paddles.
During the winter months they meet on Sunday nights at the Flash Leisure Centre from 5–7pm for pool sessions. If you would like to join e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
