A local musician has secured a gig that will see him play at an exclusive VIP party flight across the Atlantic.

Jamie Brownfield (pictured), 25, from Llanrhaeadr, is one of three musicians that has won the opportunity to play on the maiden British Airways flight from London to New Orleans, the home of jazz.

Grammy winning singer, songwriter and pianist, Jon Cleary, and double MOBO award-winning saxophonist, YolanDa Brown, selected the three winners who will ‘busk’ to 150 VIPs on the airline’s exclusive charter flight to the ‘Big Easy’ for Mardi Gras.

Trumpet player Jamie, said: “I’m a bit of a plane geek and have my private pilot’s license so performing on one on the way to New Orleans will be very, very surreal! I’ve been playing New Orleans style jazz for the past eight years so to have the chance to visit the home of jazz and busk in the French Quarter is a dream for me.”

Jamie is a widely respected jazz musician who started on the cornet aged 9, playing in the local brass band and by the time he was 12 was performing jazz in public, guesting wherever he could at local jazz clubs.

In 2005, at age 13, he formed his first band The JB Quintet and the following year recorded his first CD ‘No Animals Were Harmed….’

He also co-runs both The Brownfield/Byrne Quintet and Hot Six with saxophonist Liam Byrne.

He will travel with a friend on the flight, and enjoy three nights’ accommodation at the Hyatt Regency along with Mardi Gras parade tickets.

From March 27, British Airways will launch a four times a week New Orleans service.
