Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (33)

A good show of OTM cattle this week topping at £1298.55 (165ppkg) for a 787kg Limousin from J & K Higgs, Cwmfron. TH Williams & Sons, Pentre Farm, presented a 749kg Charolais making £1123.50 (150ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1316.70 (154ppkg) from W L Hamer, The Bryn. Steers 48 to 72 months topped at £986.90 (139ppkg) for a 710kg Limousin from E J Lewis, Rhoslas.

Otm Cows (x16) averaged 129.30ppkg / £871.16.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x6) averaged 136.56ppkg / £896.07.

Heifers under 48 months (x4) averaged 136.38ppkg / £796.49.

Steers under 48 months (x1) averaged 139ppkg / £986.90.

Steers under 48 months (x3) averaged 167.62ppkg / £999.60.

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 131.43ppkg / £1265.72.

Overall average of 132.51ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (3321)

An entry of 3321 prime lambs sold to an average of 183.44ppkg.

Lights (225) to 207ppkg from J Meredith, Lodge Farm. Others to 194ppkg from B & EM Richards, Tyn Y Celyn Average of 175.89ppkg.

Standards (251) to 209ppkg from J A Gwalchmai. 5 Minffordd. Others to 206ppkg from S J Smith, Penybryn. Average of 184.28ppkg.

Mediums (1114) to  265ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 241ppkg from M C Davies, Lower Brynelyn. Average of 184.28ppkg

Heavies (893) to 235ppkg from M C Davies, Lower Brynelen. Others to 228ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Average of  171.34ppkg   

Over Weights (654) to 200ppkg from FG & G Mountford, Middle Heldre. Others to 189ppkg from M P Harding, Lower Cefnypwll.  Average of 144.95ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (997)

An entry of 997 Prime Lambs sold to an average of 240.68ppkg.

Lights (18) to 241ppkg from M Davies, Pantyrofyn. Others to 232ppkg. Average of 234.12ppkg.

Standards (263) to 301ppkg  from GE Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley. Others to 291ppkg from DG & BE Jenkins, Gaerfawr. Average of 239.78ppkg.

Mediums (698) to 270ppkg from B H Evans & Son, Rowton Grange. Others to 267ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Average of 241.09ppkg.

Heavies (11) to 217ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Others to 204ppkg from L Harding, Swn-y-Gwynt. Average of 192.36ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2305)

A good entry of culls this week seeing averages of £60.77 for ewes and £86.34 for rams. Ewes topped at £132 for 7 ewes from JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm. Also from the same home another 7 ewes making £123. R J Mill, Blaenhirbant, sold 2 rams making £280, another two rams from the same homemade £190 & £170 respectively.

COUPLES

Another entry of couples this week despite not being a catalogued sale, 481 ewes with their lambs went under the hammer, the majority old hardier sorts but did include 36 hoggs with lambs.

Top price of the day reached £200 twice, first for 5 mule 2 year old with twin lambs at foot from B Balmer, Townsend, and second E W Howells & Son, Oakwood, for 6 Texel x hogs with single Beltex x lambs. DE & KD Langford, Brunant, sold 8 Suffolk x yearlings with twin lambs for £192 and BL Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, sold 11 Texel x full mouth ewes with Twin beltex x lambs for £186.

Best singles hit £172 for a 2 year old Beltex with Beltex lambs at foot from E J Lewis, Rhoslas, who sold Other Beltex and Texel x 2 year olds with singles for £150. Catalogues sale of 600 couples next week including a prize sale of hogs and lambs which has been kindly sponsored by Greenlands Insurance.

DAIRY CATTLE

3 dairy cows forward this week from JRD Best & Son, Pentrego, the first a British Friesian 1st calver making £1700. The other two both being 2nd calvers both making £1660 respectively.
