Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (29)

An entry of 29 otms this week, topping at £840.16 (118ppkg) for a 712kg British Blue cow from L Parkes, Ysgubor Newydd. GJ & FJ Edwards, Llyswen Farm, sold a 620kg British Blue otm making £768.80 (124ppkg). Heifers under 48 months topped at £734.40 (136ppkg) for a Saler heifer weighing 540kg.

Otm Cows (x13) averaged 100.97ppkg / £642.14.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x6) averaged 95.77ppkg / £545.60.

Heifers under 48 months (x4) averaged 119.03ppkg / £647.25.

Steers under 48 months (x2) averaged 144ppkg / £933.12.

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 91.89ppkg / £765.90.

Overall average of 106.03ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (2983)

An entry of 2983 prime lambs sold to an average of 197.89ppkg.

Lights (145) to 206ppkg from RGK Hodnett, Willey House. Others to 202ppkg from EL Evans & Co, Green Farm. Average of 189.46ppkg.

Standards (238) to 241ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 236ppkg from JA Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Average of 199.12ppkg.

Mediums (901) to  301ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 256ppkg from JA Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Average of 198.54ppkg

An entry of 479 Prime Lambs sold to an average of 251.54ppkg.

Mediums (320) to 283ppkg from GN & M Morris, New Sontley Farm. Others to 272ppkg from J Corfield & Sons, Fairfiled. Average of 250.03ppkg.

Heavies (15) to 223ppkg from GN & M Morris, New Sontley Farm. Others to 218ppkg from BR Corfield, Rhos Royal. Average of 217.93ppkg.

Over Weights () to 181ppkg from DS Jerman. Gwernau. Average of 177.42ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1616)

A slightly smaller entry of 1616 cull sheep saw strong averages of £58 for ewes and £85 for rams. Topping the ewe section at £133 were 4 ewes from G Davies, Lan Farm. Also from the same home were 2 ewes from £125. Rams topped at £144 from Probert & Probert, Lower Hill. GA Thomas, Penllain, presented a ram making £142.

COUPLES

A fantastic bank holiday entry of 489 couples which included the first hoggs and lambs of the season. Despite the poor, drizzly weather, large numbers of buyers, new and old, were in attendance to see the hoggs with lambs at foot steel the show.

Top price of the day soared to £220 for a cracking Texel x hogg with a single beltex lamb from EW Howells & Son, Oakwood. A further 21 Texel x hoggs with single lambs split into 4 lots from the same home averaged £96/life.

Suffolk x hoggs with single lambs from DE & KD Langford, Brunant, hit £189 and two pens presented by D Gethin, Llanyhared, hot £182 for texel x hoggs with beltex lambs and £182 again for Suffolk x hoggs with beltex x lambs. Of the 70 hoggs on offer 64 made over £150 with 48 making over £170.

A good entry of 419 older ewes with lambs at foot saw prices hit £180 for a Texel x 3 year old ewe with twin lambs from G A Jones & C M Morgan. Cefn Brith, again at £180 were 2 Texel x full mouth ewes with Twin texel x lambs from M J Williams, Pontyperson. Other twins from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, sold to £178 for 10 4 year old mules with 20 Beltex lambs and £170 for a Texel x yearling with twin beltex lambs from M M & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden.

Singles hit £151 for 4 Texel x 3 and 4 year old with beltex x lambs from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, and £140 for 4 suffolk yearlings from J B C Gwillim, Bwlch Garth, who sold further singles to £128 & £121.

Non catalogued sale of couples next week sale to commence at 11 am. Entries are now being taken for the prize sale of hoggs and lambs on Monday 1st may which has been kindly sponsored by Jeremy Evans from Greenlands Insurance. CADE LAMBS: An entry of 122 cade lambs this week sold to an average of £8 topping at £20.

COWS & CALVES

13 cows and calves and 4 in-calf heifers forward this week topping at £2580 was a Limousin 1st calver with her Limousin heifer calf from M & JE Jones & DCE Davies, Cwm Farm, also from the same was a similar outfit making £2520. M R Williams, Wern Holding, presented a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Limousin x heifer calf making £2320.

DE & E Davies, Cefnyberrin Isaf, presented 4 in-calf black Hereford x heifers, all pd’ approx. 5 months in-calf to a Limousin bull making £9810, £980, £960 and £960 respectively.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 6 lots, £1800 - £2000 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, £1400 - £1600 1 lot, £1200 - £1400 1 lot and <£1000 6 lots.
