Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross on Welshpool.

OTMS (30)

A bigger entry of otms this week topping at £1432 (160ppkg) for a 895kg Limousin cow from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall. Also from the same home was another Limousin cow weighing 740kg making £1258 (170ppkg). E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, presented an otm Limousin cow weighing 781kg making £1312.08 (168ppkg). T & A & R Tudor, Llysun, presented a 787kg Simmental Otm cow making £1164.76 (148ppkg).

Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1326.82 (163ppkg) for a 814kg Limousin from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall. MP Jones, Pantrhedynog, presented a 521kg Welsh black 29 months old cow making £807.55 (155ppkg). T & A & R Tudor, Llysun, presented a 808kg Saler cow making £1163.52 (144ppkg).

Heifers under 48 months topped at £934.56 (132ppkg) for a Welsh Black weighing 708kg from M P Jones, Pantrhedynog. J & B Vaughan, Sychtyn, presented a 380kg Charolais heifer making £570 (150ppkg).

Otm Cows (x16) averaged 126.95ppkg / £874.44 topping at 170ppkg.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x6) averaged 145.74ppkg / £1038.65 topping at 163ppkg.

Heifers under 48 months (x5) averaged 111.74ppkg / £605.84 topping at 150ppkg.

Steers under 48 months (x1) averaged 130ppkg / £462.80 topping at 130ppkg.

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 133.01ppkg / £1135.87 topping at 153ppkg.

Overall average of 129.47ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (3586)

An entry of 3586 prime lambs sold to an average of 168.34ppkg.

Super Lights (43) to 131ppkg from E I Edwards, Bryncelyn. Others to 130ppkg from M & H Evans, Tycerrig. Average of 118.94ppkg.

Lights (194) to 197ppkg from DJL & SJ Evans, Rhoscyninfa. Others to 195ppkg from GO Jones & JA Lewis, Wern Farm. Average of 150.17ppkg.

Standards (808) to 215ppkg from D R Oliver & Son, Tirdu. Others to 195ppkg from S H Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Average of 164.54ppkg.

Mediums (1439) to 225ppkg from E B Ellis, Penisarcwm. Others to 224ppkg from Probert & Probert, Lower Hill. Average of 171.85ppkg

Heavies (821) to 205ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Others to 196ppkg from Jones Bros, Rhiwaedog. Average of 165.37ppkg

Over Weights (211) to 188ppkg & 183ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Others to 168ppkg from IE & M Gittins, Lower Ucheldre. Average of 146.91ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1821)

An entry of 1821 culls this week met with similar averages of £46.21 for ewes and £60.07 for rams. Topping the ewe section at £132.50 £122 was JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm, with a good run of big Texel ewes. G James and Son, penybank sold ewes to £120. Rams topped at £101 from JL & JER Davies, Ffinnant and JM Price, Maeshyfryd.

STORE LAMBS (463)

Good entry of store lambs this week selling to a top of £62 for welsh tup lambs from G & A Orrells, Maesderwen. Mixed and clean lambs topped at £60 for texel x lambs from J Tudor, Bryn Awel.

Averages of the day:

Theave lambs (51) averaged £40.65 topping at £55.50.

Mixed and clean (204) averaged £52.08 topping at £60.

Tup lambs (162) averaged £45.05 topping at £62.

Mixed and tup lambs (45) averaged £48.40 topping at £57.50.

Cade Lambs - An entry of 25 cade lambs this week sold to a top of £17 from T & A & R Tudor, Llysun. Average of the day was £9.60.

IN-LAMB EWES & COUPLES

A small entry of 41 ewes all from one home this week, Mr G Davies, Pennant, with prices hitting £95 for some strong Texel x 2 and 3 year old ewes scanned at 193 % to a Texel tup. 2 year old mules from the same home hit £83 again scanned in lamb to a Texel ram at 164%. And lastly 12 Welsh full mouth ewes scanned at 183% again to a Texel tup sold for £70.

Catalogue entry of 250 in-lamb ewes next week to commence at 11.30am.

Couples

A small entry of 19 ewes with their lambs, which saw trade peak at £155 for a 3 year old Welsh Mule with twin lambs from T M Davies, Wynnstay Farm. The same vendor sold 3 year old Welsh Mules with strong single lambs that sold for £137. Mr Davies’ run averaged £60/life.

GTW Andrew, Bwlch, sold full mouth Texel ewes with twins to £152 and as found mules with twin lambs to £152, whilst as found ewes with single lambs from the same home hit £121, with the whole run averaging £53/life.

Overall couples averaged £138.

Catalogued sale of 40 couples next week, sale to commence following the in-lamb ewes.

STORE CATTLE

An entry of 135 store cattle at the mid-February sale. Averages for the day were 213.66ppkf or £964.50 for steers and £197.79 or £813.47 for heifers, trade was good for the cattle on offer.
