Welshpool Livestock Sales held a sale at Buttington Cross on Monday which produced the following prices:

OTMS (11)

A much smaller entry of Otm cows this week, topping at £1332.80 (160ppkg) for a 833kg Limousin cow from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. JM & JG Shearer, Cochsidan, presented a 675kg Limousin cow making £978.75 (145ppkg).

Otm Cows (x10) averaged 112.74ppkg / £697.44.

Otm Bull (x1) averaged 114ppkg / £1120.62.

Overall average of 112.92ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (4084)

An entry of 4084 prime lambs sold to an improved average of 172.16ppkg.

Super Lights (83) to 180ppkg from Williams & Owen, Cyffiau. Others to 159ppkg from E W Howells, Esgair Yr Hydd. Average of  155.94ppkg.

Lights (431) to 183ppkg from AP & JE Jenkins, Pontyperchyll. Others to 180ppkg from A & M Evans & Co, Cwrt y Llyn. Average of 166.51ppkg.

Standards (1002) to 244ppkg from R A Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 200ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 172.44ppkg.

Mediums (1590) to 270ppkg from  R A Davies & H Isaac, Llwynderw. Others to 248ppkg from R A Davies, Llwynderw. Average of 173.16ppkg

Heavies (667) to 244ppkg from R A Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 218ppkg from JL & JER Davies, Ffinnant. Average of 164.97ppkg   

Over Weights (241) to 211ppkg from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Others to 170ppkg from Lythwood Sheep. Average of 147.88ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1927)

A slightly bigger entry of cull sheep this week, seeing averages of £49.17 for ewes and £70.35 for rams. Topping the ewe section at £118 from J A Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. D N Williams, Cwmdylluan, sold ewes to £115. Rams G & A Orrells, Maesderwen, sold a ram topping the section at £126.

STORE LAMBS (401)

A smaller entry of store lambs this week topping at £71.50 for texel tup lambs from R Rees, Esgair-y-Llyn. Wether lambs topped at £69.50 from J E Owen & Co, Gilfach. Mixed and clean lambs topped at £64 for texel x lambs from G & A Orrells, Maesderwen.

Averages: Theave Lambs (x123) averaged £52.25.

Mixed and Clean (x139) averaged £50.53.

Wether lambs (x22) averaged £46.19.

Tup Lambs (x104) averaged £52.27.

Cade Lambs -  An entry of 13 cade lambs selling to a top of £24, seeing an average of £18 being achieved.

IN-LAMB EWES & COUPLES

The second catalogued sale of in-lamb ewes saw an entry of 245 which sold to a firmer trade with purchasers more cautious in their bidding. The sale included E L Evans, Derlwyn’, final consignment of his flock dispersal which saw 83 Texel x Beltex & Lleyn ewes, in flock ages in lamb to Beltex, Charolais or Beltex x Texel, sell to an average of £129/ head with trade topping at £140 for a pen of 6 Beltex x Texel 2 year old carrying 3 singles & 3 twins.

Averages of the day:

Yearlings (50) averaged £98 to £135.

2 year old (55) averaged £102 to £140.

3year old (37) averaged £91 to £139.

4 year old/ Full Mouth (81) averaged £68 to £132.

As found ewes (28) averaged £55 to £60.

Couples

An increased entry of 57 couples sold to a top of £162 twice. First from JBC Gwilliam, Bwlch Garth, for 4 Texel x 3 and 4 year old ewes with twin Texel x  lambs at foot. And second from G & JL & RW Pritchard, Penysarn, for 3 Suffolk x full mouth  ewes with 6 Texel x lambs.

G & JL & RW Pritchard’s’ consignment of 28 homebred  aged Suffolk x ewes with 48 Texel x lambs sold to an average of £53 / life. JBC Gwilliam, Bwlch Garth, presented a run of 14 predominantly Texel x aged ewes with 21 Texel x lambs which sold to an average of £51 / head.

Averages:

Ewes with single lambs averaged £108 to £125.

Ewes with twin lambs averaged £149 to £162.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 12 cows and calves met with a solid trade for the outfits on offer. Leading the way at £1520 was a 2010 born Limousin x cow with a heifer calf at foot presented by W D Jones & Son, Upper Scafell, Newtown, whilst a beef Shorthorn cow with a Simmental x heifer calf from the same home sold for £1510. Presented F J Owens & Son, Llettygynfach, was a 2012  Blonde x cow with a Steer calf which made £1480, and from the same home was a 2011 Blonde x cow with a Blonde heifer calf which sold for £1430.

VAS & SM Corbett, The Gorther, Felindre, sold a British Blue 2nd calver with a Charolais x heifer calf for £1380. From G P Vaughan & Son, Dolcorsllwyn, was a Pedigree Black Limousin bull sired by Goldies Black Forever which went onto sell for £3000.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £1500 + 2lots, £1400 - £1500 2 lots, £1300 - £1400 3 lots, £1200 - £1300 1 lot, £1100 - £1200 2 lots, < £1100 2 lots.
