Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a seasonal show of stock at Buttington Cross on Monday. Our report is brought to you by Dennis Shingler & Sons.


OTMS (42)

A larger entry of cull ewes this week reaching a top of £1311.21 (153ppkg) for a 857kg Saler Cow from VG & M Jones, Bryn-Yr-Hesglwyn. HG & IW Rees, Faidre Fach, presented a Limousin cow weighing 652kg making £1075.80 (165ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1258.40 (143ppkg) for a 880kg Stabiliser cow from G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof. R J Hughes & Co, Argoed, presented a Blonde cow weighing 602kg making £866.88 (144ppkg). D W Davies, Penybank, presented a 659kg 39 month old Limousin heifer making £1113.71 (169ppkg).

OTM Cows (x28) averaged 124.83ppkg / £826.05

Cows 48 to 72 months (x6) averaged 130.57ppkg / £895.51

Heifers Under 48 months (x6) averaged 136.26ppkg / £779.62

Steers under 48 months (x2) averaged 123.46ppkg / £914.21

Overall average of 127.04ppkg


PRIME LAMBS (5061)

A large entry of  5061 prime lambs sold to an average of 178.69ppkg.

Lights (349) to 186ppkg from D B Williams, Tycoch. Others to 185ppkg from TE Rowlands ai Fab, Tyddyn Ddu. Average of 164.12ppkg.

Standards (1033) to 240ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 220ppkg from DW & SM Roberts, The White House. Average of 177.87ppkg

Mediums (2590) to 222ppkg from M J Williams, Pontyperson. Others to 221ppkg from T & B Williams, Cilmawr. Average of  180.33ppkg.

Heavies (984) to 214ppkg from DW & SM Roberts, The White House & JE Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys. Others to 205ppkg from JE Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys. Average of 179.11ppkg.

Over Weights (81) to 189ppk from T & B Williams, Cilmawr. Others to 177ppkg from AE Casewell, Bodynfoel. Average of 164.41ppkg.


CULL SHEEP (3325)

A good show of cull sheep seeing averages of £51 for ewes and £67.40 for rams. Topping the ewe section was C Davies, Blaenyglyn, with 6 ewes making £122.50. CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm, presented one ewe making £103. Ram topped at £136 from J Allsop & Sons, Enchmarsh Farm. £110 was achieved by E R Harris, Pantycaragle.


STORE LAMBS (1009)

Another strong entry of 1009 store lambs selling to an overall average of £53.

Top price of the day went to O M E Thomas & Co, Hafod Ffraith for Texel x mixed/clean lambs selling to £64. T P Jerman, Church Farm sold Texel x mixed/clean lambs to £63 while D Davies & Co, Pentremawr sold Charollais x mixed/clean lambs to £62.

Generally, strong continental x lambs selling from £55-£60.  Longer term lambs selling between £45-£54.

Store lambs to be sold again next Monday from 10.30am.


BREEDING EWES (311)

An increased entry of 311 breeding ewes sold to a somewhat slower trade, although the strongest sorts were keenly contested with Suffolk x yearlings from RF & DJ Price, Pentrenant, selling to £140 and Texel x yearlings from D W Davies, Penybank, selling to £138 and £128 respectively. DE & KD Langford, Brunant, sold two pens of Texel x yearlings for £132. ST Jones, Arllan Fawr, sold a run of 47 full mouth Texel & Mule to £126 with the run averaging £99. Catalogued sale of 1200 breeding ewes next Monday commencing at 11.30am through ring 4.


COWS & CALVES

An entry of 44 cows and calves this week met with a top of £2350 for a Pedigree Limousin 3rd calver with her pedigree Limousin bull calf from VAS & SM Corbett, The Gorther. R I Owen & Co, Cwmfynnon, presented a 2013 born British Blue x cow with a Charolais Bull calf making £1510. J S Vance, Upper Grimmer, presented a Pedigree Limousin 1st calver with a Pedigree Limousin heifer calf making £1500.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 1lot, £1500 - £1700 3 lots, £1200 - £1500 24 lots, £1000 – £1200 9lots,£1000 4 lots.


STORE CATTLE

An entry of 141 store cattle met with averages of 207.07ppkg or £911.72 for steer and store heifers averaged 207.94ppkg or £878.42. Leading the way with top prices per head were as follows:
